Jessica Beels works in a variety of media, primarily recycled materials and handmade overbeaten flax paper shrunk over armatures. Much of her work is form-driven, addressing issues of interior and exterior space, with a particular interest in the geometry of microscopic organisms, fossils, and seed pods. Her installations often examine the impacts of humans on the environment.
Jessica’s educational background includes an undergraduate degree in art history from Harvard University and a master’s degree in Early American Decorative Arts from the University of Delaware Winterthur Program. Her technical training includes extensive involvement in technical theater, as well as classes at the Corcoran School of Art (Washington, DC), Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (Deer Isle, ME), and Penland School of Crafts (Penland, NC). She exhibits and sells her work at juried craft shows and in galleries throughout the US and teaches workshops on beadweaving and papermaking by appointment.
