Alex Kasten

ARTIST STATEMENT
In my sculpture, I explore transformation and interpretation. The vast possibilities of the everyday relationships, artifacts, and symbols around us guide my creative endeavors. Whether it’s transforming old into new, the complex into the simple, or redefining the known into the unfamiliar, my work is rooted in observation and the conviction that we all have the power to reinvent ideas, objects, and beliefs into something that is our own.

BIO
During a 25-plus year career in communications, Kasten has engaged audiences worldwide – visually, on the web, and in print. His work in sculpture grew naturally from an aptness for observation and interpretation that has been present throughout his life and career – from a childhood spent observing art and artists at work; through an academic interest in cultural Anthropology and the discovery of artifacts; to a professional career that spans multiple media. A native Washingtonian, Kasten earned a BA in Anthropology with honors and distinction from Connecticut College and an MA in Communications from The Johns Hopkins University. He studied sculpture under David Smalley at Connecticut College’s Cummings Arts Center.
