On display at the McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) and carefully juried by MPA Curator and Artistic Director Nancy Sausser, Sculpture NOW 2024 featured works created within the last two years by more than sixty members of the Washington Sculptors Group. As may be expected from a non-thematic exhibition of this size, viewers were presented with a sweeping range of materials, techniques, scales, and concerns. More noteworthy, however—and this is partly owing to a deeply thoughtful installation—were the number of through lines binding works across the show, including a shared attention to the environment and, relatedly, a preoccupation with how we might connect to others within it. As perhaps befits the moment of its staging, the exhibition overall had the feel of an inflection point, the work often containing questions to which clear answers remain unknown.
