Mike Shaffer

My interests are widespread including the fundamental question of what art is, the whole picture, theoretically and beyond—art versus non-art, and the philosophy of what it is that qualifies something to be art. I like abstraction and objects associated with popular culture. My overall approach centers on conceptual work but I spend a lot of time with sculpture and painting that incorporate elements of length as seen in a series of works involving lines and grids on canvas and a series of vertical towers based on a horizontal-vertical format that embraces log cabin-like features and forms suggestive of memorials and monuments.

I began painting and making sculpture in the early 1970s and after working in over two dozen formats, expanded my overall approach to include conceptual and experimental directions including digital work and video by 2002 and later drawing, portraiture and photography.
