Barbara Januszkiewicz is a Washington base artist. Her subtle variations in brushstroke create weightless and luminous fans of color. The artist is able to create vibrant, yet translucent colors influenced by The Washington Color School and by music. While the artist’s work is reminiscent of Morris Louis and Helen Frankenthal Januszkiewicz chooses to utilize brushes to control her fans of color rather than create pours in her paintings and in her sculpture work creates 3d color fields. Her dynamic visual interpretation employs large color fields that meld and overlap in translucent layers, evoking the rhythm and flow of her musical inspiration. Intense color compositions to subdued shades of reverberations, her paintings strive to visually capture the sensation of sound. ” Seeing my art as in waves of curving color-shapes submerged in translucent rich washes helps to capture the complexity and color of a song.”
Januszkiewicz was trained under the Chinese master Mun Quan at Jacksonville University in the late 1970’s. She has worked closely with Paul Reed the last of the Washington Color School original artists.
Her artwork has appeared predominantly in the Washington, D.C., area, including the Phillips Collection, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Hirshhorn Museum, Art club of Washington, Gallery K, MPA and The Art League. Her works can also be found in feature magazines, films, cable and international television formats. She was a watercolor instructor, adjunct professor for the Corcoran College of Art in Washington DC. Currently teaches at Mclean Project for the Arts.
