Ed Holten Artist and Curator, I am originally from Rockville Maryland.  I received an MFA in Sculpture from VCU and a degree in Printmaking and Film Photography from Towson State. I most recently I served as President of Artspace in Richmond Virginia.  I have been awarded a sculpture fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts as well as a sculpture grant from the Virginia State Commission of the Arts. My artwork has been exhibited extensively, including a solo exhibition at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art.

In my Art I try to create works that are both complex and simple. They are precise and foolish. They might appear cryptic, but have a simple emotional thrust. The thoughts I have while making them are mostly emotional. The themes I explore involve avoidance and acceptance of responsibility, submission and desire and the longing to recreate the past and/or influence the future. when I make art I often use a personal sculptural idiom to convey meaning—boxes, stairways, light sources, recycled and reappointed objects and furniture that communicate through allusion, intimation and evocation.
