Patte Reider Ormsby

Fredericksburg, VA and Wellfleet, MA

I am a multi-disciplinary artist, working in both 2 and 3D. As a painter I build my paintings by layers of spray paint, oil, metal leaf and powders. I dissolve them in an alchemy of acidic solution to patina, rust or reveal colored pattern beneath the surface.      But sometimes 2 dimensions just aren't enough.

My 3D work varies in media from papier maché to assemblage and reliquary vessels.  Metalwork and jewelry are also in my bag of tricks, finding their way into hanging sculptures of hammered wire, stained-glass, found objects and sparkly things that capture light and spit it back out again.

My sculptures happen organically, triggered by things I find. Thematic ideas evolve as the work takes shape.  Repurposing objects brings heady thoughts of poetry, art history, social injustice, impending doom, the nature of the universe, world peace, belly fat and how's your mother? (Fine thanks, how's yours?)  Often a little humor, dark or light makes the piece complete.
