|The art guitars I create are intended to adorn a wall, be admired, and be played.
All the work centers on a figure or figures within a shape representing music played or imagined.
Most of my sculptured guitars grow organically from a single, romanticized head-and-shoulders into what the figure’s pose will be; and then on to what the action is. The guitar format allows me to bend metaphorical space and create adjacent allegories extending across the sides to the back. Several guitars have another ”image piece” on the back that add to metaphors on the frontal narrative. I like to allow surprise twists and turns to the imagery as the viewer studies the work.
The hardness of the woods are then carved to a thinner and more freely vibrating surface allowing the woods harmonics to be emphasized. Fitting of components are designed to enhance the woods harmonics to the natural sound of the piece. Components are selected to blend into the designs as other elements within the narrative compositions.
Players who have used the instruments in performance have said that they are the best sounding guitars they have heard. All my work is also about something else, I am always seeking a duality expressed in all things.
